Here’s what you need to know about grains in The Farmer’s Dog fresh food.

What are grains?

Grains are the edible seeds from grasses called cereal crops, such as wheat, barley, and oat. These cultivars are staples in a human diet, and can also be used in dog foods. Rice, barley, oats, millet, corn, and wheat are all grains that dog-food formulas may use.

Are grains just filler?

Grains in The Farmer’s Dog formulas are never filler. Everything that goes into our food is there for dogs’ health. Just like the meat and vegetables in our packs, the grains are human-grade and support the overall balance of the recipes that include them.

Our on-staff, board-certified nutritionists choose each ingredient for its nutritional value as part of a complete and balanced recipe—and we fully cook our ready-to-eat foods to kill dangerous pathogens while preserving nutritional value and avoiding the drawbacks of traditional kibble’s high-heat processing. The grains in our recipes are a good source of an omega-6 fatty acid dogs need called linoleic acid, and the fiber provided by those grains can support gut health and provide a feeling of fullness—which may help dogs on a weight-loss plan.
